The Great Barrier Reef by Scenic Flight
The outer-reef part of a Whitsunday scenic flight: Hardy, Hook and Heart reefs, how far out they are, how long you spend over them, and whales and turtles from the air.
Every Whitsunday scenic flight from Airlie Beach goes out to the Great Barrier Reef, but only one listing names more reefs than Heart Reef. Fly Australia Charter’s Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight names Hardy Reef, Hook Reef and Heart Reef and gives the reef about 15 minutes of its hour in the air. It is US$240 a person (checked November 2026), with marine park fees in the price.
The other half of the hour goes to the islands and Hill Inlet, so this is a reef-and-islands flight, not a reef-only one.
How far out the reef is

The islands are close to the coast; the outer reef is not. Heart Reef is 76 km from Whitsunday Airport in a straight line and about 57 km beyond Hill Inlet. The reef is the furthest part of the flight, and the boat day to Hardy Reef takes 10 hours.
What you fly over
The Reef Authority groups Hardy, Line, Hook, Barb and Bait reefs as one unit in its Whitsundays plan of management. Heart Reef is a heart-shaped coral formation inside Hardy Reef, and Tourism Whitsundays notes that its shape is best seen from above.
Hook Reef, on Fly Australia Charter’s route, is one of these outer reefs. It is not Hook Island, which is one of the islands of the Whitsundays.
Nobody swims at Heart Reef itself: Tourism Whitsundays notes that swimming and snorkelling are not permitted at the formation. The Reef Authority’s plan marks aircraft landing areas at Hardy Reef and Bait Reef, but the scenic flights on this site do not land; they fly over and return to their airfield.
Wildlife from the air

On Fly Australia Charter’s flight you may see manta rays, large green turtles, dugongs and sharks, and whales at certain times of year; sightings are not guaranteed. Humpbacks come to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park from May to September (Reef Authority). Aircraft must not fly below 1,000 feet within 300 metres of a whale, so a whale from a scenic flight is a shape in the water, not a close-up.

GetYourGuide listings (checked November 2026).
The Reef Authority’s environmental management charge on a sightseeing flight is 40 Australian cents an excursion (checked November 2026), and Fly Australia Charter includes marine park fees in its price.
In the water instead
A flight shows the reef’s shapes; it does not show coral up close. For that, Cruise Whitsundays' Great Barrier Reef Adventure Cruise is a 10-hour boat day to a pontoon at Hardy Reef with snorkelling, a semi-submersible and an underwater observatory. A scenic flight and a boat day sets that beside the flights.
For the outer reef named place by place, with the islands in the same hour, Fly Australia Charter’s flight is the one to book.
