Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet from Above
Seeing Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet swirls from a scenic flight, what the tide does to the view, and when a flight-plus-boat day that lands on the sand is the better buy.
Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach are on every Whitsunday scenic flight, and from the air you see what the beach cannot show you: the whole pattern of white sand and blue water that the tide moves across the inlet. These flights only look, though. If you want to walk to the lookout and sit on the sand, you need a boat day, and one package we link does both. For the view alone, Fly Australia Charter’s Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight gives Hill Inlet about 15 minutes, from US$240 a person (checked November 2026).
The pilot makes several passes over each place on the route, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet included, so there is more than one chance at a photograph.
Where they are

Both are on Whitsunday Island, the largest island on the map. Whitehaven Beach is a 7 km stretch of white silica sand on the island’s south-east side, about 30 km east of Shute Harbour (Queensland Parks). Hill Inlet is at its northern end. From Whitsunday Airport it is about 28 km to Hill Inlet in a straight line, a short hop for a plane that then goes on to the reef.
What the tide does to the view

Queensland Parks describes the view at Hill Inlet as “ever-changing shapes of blue water and white silica sand created by the moving tides”. That is the point of seeing it from above: the lookout shows the inlet from one side, the plane shows it from overhead.
It also means no two flights see quite the same picture. Queensland Parks does not name a best tide for the view from the air, and the flights run to their own timetables, so you book a time, not a tide.
Fly over it, or fly and land
None of the scenic flights sold here lands at Whitehaven. You reach the sand by boat, or by seaplane: Tourism and Events Queensland lists Air Whitsunday, whose seaplane flies over the reef and lands at Whitehaven Beach, booked direct and not sold here.
Among the products we link, the one that does both is the Fly Raft package: a 60-minute flight over Heart Reef, Whitehaven and Hill Inlet, then a day on semi-rigid boats with a guided national park walk to the Hill Inlet Lookout, snorkelling on an inner fringing reef and a tropical lunch on Whitehaven Beach. Its South Whitehaven option spends at least two hours on the beach and adds the Southern Whitehaven Lookout.
Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight
Fly Australia Charter: 60 minutes in the air, about 15 of them over Hill Inlet, several passes over Whitehaven Beach, then Hardy, Hook and Heart reefs. Ten minutes by bus from Airlie Beach.

The Fly Raft package: the flight first, then semi-rigid boats to the Hill Inlet Lookout walk, a fringing-reef snorkel and lunch on Whitehaven Beach. Not for pregnant women, back problems or over 125 kg.

The package costs about US$148 more than Fly Australia Charter’s flight (November 2026 prices) and takes the whole day. If you have that day, it is the way to see Whitehaven from both sides. If you have a morning, take the flight.
Before a day on the sand
- Lookout works. Queensland Parks will carry out maintenance at Hill Inlet and Tongue Point from 30 November to 4 December 2026, weather permitting; parts of the lookout platforms and boardwalks may close, but at least one Hill Inlet lookout stays open. This matters only for boat days.
- Stingers. Marine stingers are in tropical Queensland waters all year, and the risk is higher from November to May (Queensland Government). The Fly Raft day includes a sun suit or wetsuit for snorkelling.
- Tides on the boat day. The Fly Raft itinerary is a guideline that changes with the tide, wind and weather.
For more on the lookout walk itself, whitehaven-beach-tours.com covers the track to the Hill Inlet Lookout and the tides from the ground.
For a clear look at the swirls with the reef in the same hour, the flight is the one to book.
